If you have ever played Bubble Pop or any of the countless clones, you will be instantly familiar with this game. For those that haven't, the premise of this puzzler is simple. You get a random board with different colored stars and have to pop them by tapping your screen. The only catch is that you have to pop adjacent stars of the same color (either horizontally or vertically, not diagonally, and popping more at once gives you additional points). The popped stars will then disappear and allow those above them to drop, giving you new popping combinations. This process repeats until there are no more stars to pop, and the game gets rid of all the un-popped leftovers. If you meet the score required to progress to the next level, you move on; otherwise it's game over. Your score from the previous level carries over, so the only way to keep increasing your high score is to clear the board.

The simple graphics and sound are more than enough for a game like this and allow it to run on a wide range of Android hardware.

Popping Stars has the potential (eventually) to be a really great game, and I absolutely love what is in place right now, but I have to wonder why it requires so many permissions. Any single player game that wants to open network sockets and access information about networks (unless it's a free app with ad support) makes me a bit suspicious. Those are some potent permissions to require of your users, especially for a game with no multiplayer.

I was also not too fond of the limited settings PopStar! has. The only option you currently have is to either mute the game or enable OpenFeint (which is there just for the rankings). I am not a fan of OpenFeint and don't see a reason to include it in something so simple as this. It is a lazy way implement a feature that should have been coded in manually. Although not as bad as it used to be, OpenFeint can slow down your device, requires additional permissions, and is notoriously difficult to remove properly.

My final complaint is that the game is simply too random (the initial star placement) and easy. Without any sort of time limit on the levels you can plan the best way to pop - resulting in incredibly high scores, and making level progression a breeze. The lack of power-ups and other game modes (time trial, endless mode, multiplayer, etc) are also a cause for concern. The game doesn't feel ready.

Don't take me the wrong way, it's still fun and a good way to pass the time, but without any extra options and modes - the game is not really complete. I still believe that it's worth the $.99 cent asking price, but it can't compete with some of the other Bubble Pop games on the market (at this time). Hopefully the dev's update it a bit, and give it features to match (and exceed) what their competition is currently offering.
