I've been using K-9 mail for almost a year now (samsung epic) for pop3 email. It helps me keep an eye on work emails when I'm not at my desk. I like the fact that I can set it up so it always shows the most recent 25 emails, so I'm not always having to manually delete past emails from my phone. This is particularly useful after going on vacation...I prefer to reply to emails via my laptop, and file them in folders accordingly. I don't want to see the 1100 emails that I received when I was away and have to manually delete them from my phone. If I need to see the last 50 or 100 or more emails, it will fetch them on demand. If I delete an email via my phone, it is deleted from the server (this is a setup option).
For those who prefer to have a perfect sync between their laptop and their phone email, K-9 does that, too. You can even set up folders and categorize your emails on your phone.
I like that it's very customizable (notifications, email signature, screen behavior, multiple accounts, frequency of checking for emails etc.).
Note: a few weeks ago I started having problems with K-9 not fetching my emails. I reinstalled it and it works fine again. Great program at a great price!

I would not recommend this to anyone. Ads have no place in the notification bar. I installed this when it was featured as the free app of the day. Lesson learned, read what permissions you are agreeing to. I started getting random advertisements in my notification bar, so I googled the issue and learned that a company called AirPush is behind this disturbing trend. You can download an app called AirPush Detector that will let you know which apps are spamming you so you can uninstall them.
